Resolved: Yes
Results Aug 24🤖 Context
The market required at least one USGS-listed earthquake of magnitude 4.8 or greater in Japan occurring on or after 00:00 UTC on August 21, 2026 and no later than 00:00 UTC on August 24, 2026. The USGS catalog shows three qualifying events: August 21, 2026, 12:02 UTC M5.4 148 km SSE of Tateyama, August 22, 2026, 17:00 UTC M5.8 4 km N of Toride, and August 23, 2026, 13:44 UTC M6 33 km SSW of Honchō. Each event falls inside the specified UTC window and has magnitude at least 4.8, so the market resolves yes.

Final crowd probability
The crowd was 74% sure, and they got it wrong.
Why: Extracted condition: USGS catalog must list >=1 earthquake with mag >= 4.8 that occurred in Japan on or after 2026-08-21T00:00:00Z and strictly before 2026-08-24T00:00:00Z (UTC). Observations (USGS query returned 3 matching earthquake(s)): - 2026-08-23 13:44 UTC: M6 — 33 km SSW of Honchō, Japan (lat 41.8344, lon 142.8255) - 2026-08-22 17:00 UTC: M5.8 — 4 km N of Toride, Japan (lat 35.9375, lon 140.0778) - 2026-08-21 12:02 UTC: M5.4 — 148 km SSE of Tateyama, Japan (lat 33.7171, lon 140.3802) Each listed event has magnitude >= 4.8 and each timestamp falls within the specified window (>= 2026-08-21T00:00:00Z and < 2026-08-24T00:00:00Z). The USGS catalog query therefore shows at least one qualifying earthquake, so the market resolves YES.

Given Japan's recent seismic activity, with 3 quakes over 4.5 in the past week, a quake of 4.8 or more seems likely within this narrow window.
