Kalshi Alternatives Without Real Money: Free Prediction Apps Compared (2026)
By the Clutch team · Reviewed October 7, 2026 · 8 min read
The short answer
If you like Kalshi’s markets but not the deposit, the ID check or the risk of losing money, Clutch is the closest free swap on your phone: daily news and sports markets, free credits, and points you can redeem for gift cards. Pick Manifold if you want to write your own questions, and Metaculus for long-range forecasting. None of them pays cash for a winning call, which is exactly why none of them needs your ID to play.
Kalshi is a real exchange, with real-exchange friction. It has been regulated by the CFTC since 2020, which is a genuine strength. It also means an identity check before you can trade, a minimum deposit, and real dollars on every position. If what you enjoy is calling sports and news outcomes, not trading them for money, there are free options with none of that.
What Kalshi asks of you, from its own help center
- Be 18 or older.
- Verify your identity with a driver’s license or a passport, a live photo of it, and a residential address (no PO boxes).
- Your Social Security number is not needed to deposit, trade or withdraw with non-crypto methods, but Kalshi asks for it once tax reporting thresholds are crossed.
- Deposit at least $10 ($1,000 by wire). US accounts can use a debit card, ACH, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, crypto or wire; international accounts only a debit card, crypto or wire.
- Card deposits may carry a 2% processing fee, and each trade carries a trading fee set by Kalshi’s fee schedule.
- Outside the US, Kalshi opens trading in many countries, but its member agreement lists dozens where you may not trade, including Canada, the UK, Australia and France.
Each point above is taken from Kalshi’s help center and its member agreement; the full list of pages is under the table below. None of this is a flaw: it is what a regulated, real-money exchange has to do. It is just a lot to ask if you only want to test your read of the news.

Sep 25, 2026
The Sixth Circuit sides with Ohio and Tennessee. New Jersey has meanwhile asked the Supreme Court to take up the question (No. 26-299). Sixth Circuit opinion
In short: Kalshi is legal at the federal level in the US, but whether states can regulate its sports contracts is split between appeals courts and now sits on the Supreme Court’s docket. That is worth knowing if sports are why you are there.

The alternatives, one by one
Clutch: the sports and news calls, without the money
Clutch turns the day’s news into yes/no markets, and sports is the biggest category: about a third of all predictions in our September 2026 report. You stake free credits (1 to 100 per market), the odds move with the crowd, and a correct call pays out in points. Credits come free with sign-up, daily logins, streaks, referrals and rewarded videos; you never have to buy any.
Points have no cash value and cannot be sold or transferred. You redeem them in the Shop for digital gift cards or charity donations, delivered by email. As of that report, players had made more than 1.2 million predictions, about 70% of settled predictions had come true, and the community had redeemed more than 6 million points for 435 rewards.
- Best for: calling sports and the news every day on your phone, against friends or in a league, without a deposit or an ID check.
- Limits: you never win cash. Our prize draws are open only to residents of France, so elsewhere it is the gift-card Shop. Markets are written by Clutch and most settle within days or weeks; there are no long-dated contracts and you cannot post your own. Resolution is partly automated and can be wrong, and payouts include a house margin.
The payout formula and the house margin are spelled out in the official rules.
Manifold: write the market you want
Manifold runs on play money called mana: every account starts with 1,000, and you can buy more, but it can never be cashed out. Anyone can create a market on any question, from sports to personal bets, and the creator resolves it, with moderators able to step in. Manifold also runs USDC prize drawings with a free entry available (Manifold’s FAQ asks for Ṁ1,000 invested; its official rules say no balance is required): you must be 18 or older, winners need a crypto wallet to collect and may have to show a government ID, and several US states are excluded.
- Best for: niche or personal questions Kalshi would never list.
- Limits: creator-resolved markets, prizes only in crypto, English only.
We cover it in depth in Manifold alternatives.
Metaculus: forecasting, scored
Metaculus is not a market: you give a probability and get scored on accuracy. No money is at stake, but some tournaments carry cash prizes for the most accurate forecasters, who must verify their identity to be paid. Only Metaculus admins resolve questions.
- Best for: long-range questions on science, technology and geopolitics.
- Limits: no app, and it feels more like a research tool than a game.
Good Judgment Open: train like a superforecaster
GJ Open scores your forecasts against the crowd with Brier scores, question by question, and the best forecasters can work toward Superforecaster status. Free, with no prizes mentioned in its FAQ.
- Best for: measuring your accuracy honestly over time.
- Limits: no app and no material rewards.
When Kalshi is the better pick
- You want to trade for real money, in a regulated US market: none of the free options pays cash, Clutch included.
- You want long-dated contracts on economics or politics that run for months.
- You want to size positions freely: Clutch caps stakes at 100 credits per market.
- You are after our prize draws but live outside France: they are not open to you yet.

How we compared
- On October 7, 2026 we read Kalshi’s own help center (verification, Social Security number, sign-up, transfers, card deposits and withdrawals), its member agreement and fee schedule, and the CFTC and court documents linked below.
- The same day we re-read each alternative’s official pages (FAQ, rules, prize terms) and checked which ones have mobile apps in the App Store and Google Play. Every table row links to its source.
- Clutch numbers come from our own published data (September 2026 community report). We do not compare odds with Kalshi.
- Clutch is our product: we rated it on the same criteria as the others, cons included. This is not financial or legal advice.
